SECTORAL ASSESSMENT ON WASH SYSTEM BUILDING BLOCKS RELATED TO ACCESS TO WATER, SANITATION, AND HYGIENE (WASH) IN THE HEALTH SECTOR TO IMPROVE PUBLIC HEALTH IN TANZANIA

One Health Society participated in the sectoral assessment on WASH system building blocks related to access to water, sanitation, and hygiene in the health sector to improve public health organized by WaterAid Tanzania.

WaterAid Tanzania (WAT) has contributed to increasing access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services, working closely with the Government, Civil Society Organizations, local and international NGOs. WaterAid Tanzania has delivered basic water and sanitation services to communities with the vision of reaching everyone everywhere.

In 2023, WaterAid Tanzania successfully planned and launched it’s 2023-2028 strategic implementation plan, which will execute two programs:1) Reaching every citizen with sustainable, inclusive, and safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services in targeted geographical areas.(2) Prioritizing water, sanitation, and hygiene in the health sector to improve public health.

Through the workshop we conducted a health system baseline assessment to eleven (11) building blocks WASH entry point to identify how WASH is integrated in the NTDs health system programs. WASH Building blocks includes (1) coordination & integration, (2) policy strategy and planning, (3) financing, (4) institutional arrangements and capacity, (5) accountability and regulation, (6) monitoring, (7) service delivery and behavior change, (8) water resources and environment, (9) gender and social inclusion, (10) government leadership, (11) active and empowered people and communities

Over five (5) years  One Health Society have been working at the forefront of implementing a wide range of Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) activities to Ensure the public understands the importance of safe and clean water, personal hygiene and keeping the environment clean.

Neglected tropical diseases strike unequally- causing ill health, disability and death, primarily among the poorest people of the world. Access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene is essential to prevention, care and treatment for many of these diseases. More than one billion people globally are affected by NTDs. Most live in low- and middle-income countries, often in poor quality housing and lack access to fundamentals services such as clean water, decent sanitation and access to health care.

Improved access to clean and safe water will help reduce the spread of diseases that can endanger public health. #BeatNTDs #Toward2030
